Most people pay a few hundred dollars for a roll-off dumpster, but the number you're quoted and the number you pay can be very different. Here's what goes into the price and what to ask so there are no surprises.
Typical prices by size
Angi's cost guide puts the national average around $386 per week, with these typical ranges by size:
| Size | Typical range (per week) |
|---|---|
| 10 yard | $225 to $575 |
| 20 yard | $275 to $700 |
| 30 yard | $300 to $725 |
| 40 yard | $350 to $800 |
Big metros cost more. Angi lists New York City at $500 to $1,000. Your actual price depends on your local landfill rates and hauler.
What drives the price
- Size and weight allowance: larger dumpsters cost more, and overweight tons are billed extra (Angi cites $40 to $200 per ton).
- Rental length: most prices include a set number of days, with a daily charge after that.
- Debris type: heavy materials and certain items (mattresses, tires, appliances) can carry extra fees.
- Permits: street placement usually needs a city permit, often $10 to $100 per Angi.
- Location: distance from the hauler's yard and the local disposal cost.
Hidden fees to ask about
- Fuel or environmental surcharges added on top of the quote
- Overage rate per ton, and how much weight is included
- Extra-day charges and how many days are included
- Trip charges if the driver can't place or pick up the dumpster
- Fees for specific items like mattresses, tires or appliances
